When the living room feels too confining, and the call of adventure beckons for your kids, Calgary has you covered through the cold weather.
From climbing walls like an acrobatic squirrel to enjoying beachy vibes inside when the vibes outside are anything but beachy, we've curated a list of nine delightful activities to suit every type of kid in Cowtown.
All parents want their kids to run, jump, bounce and climb…just not necessarily in the living room! When the kids’ energy levels are just a little too much for the house, and it’s too cold outside to play at the park, head on over to Flying Squirrel. Here, you can be certain that whatever you've instructed your kids to avoid doing at home is fair game and fully permitted. It’s a haven for adventurous spirits, promising an exit with sweaty, satisfied, and ready-to-relax kids.
For a day of science, curiosity and exploration, there’s no better place in Calgary for kids than this magical learning experience. Hot tip: Be sure to pack spare clothing because the water play area is a major draw.
There’s something to do in every season at this cool spot. When it’s warm, it’s a good spot to bring a picnic and soak in a day of outdoor fun, including Skyline Luge, mountain biking, or mini golf. When it’s cold, classic winter activities abound, so kiddos can lace up their skates, pop on their skis or get in line for a tube ride.
No need to fly to Mexico to feel warm sand under your feet in the middle of winter. Head on over to The Beach YYC, Calgary’s sole indoor beach volleyball and recreation facility. Open year-round, it provides a sandy haven for families, allowing them to enjoy beach-like activities and stay active regardless of the weather outside.
When the weather is right, our animal-loving kids really enjoy getting up close and personal with the animals at the zoo. And it also doesn’t hurt to have the interactive playground for the kids to enjoy while parents sit and supervise.
Whether they’re a wobbling beginner or a mini daredevil, kids have 60,000 square feet of biking wonderland to explore at B-Line Bike Park. It's like a playground on two wheels, complete with areas to explore, ramps to conquer, and a snack-filled pit stop for those crucial energy boosts.
For some old-fashioned fun, this is a can’t miss Calgary outing with kids. Everything from the exhibits and programming to the events and food feels authentic, kitschy and joyful (with some solid history lessons thrown in for good measure).
Every family needs a go-to park as their home base, where there is guaranteed fun to be had in the outdoors. Not only are there several playgrounds and a wading pool to enjoy here in the summer, there is also a lagoon you can paddle on and a mini train to ride. In the winter, fire pits are available to warm up after enjoying classic Canadian winter activities like skating.
- Calgary Tower and The CORE Shopping Centre via the SkyWalk
Technically this is three destinations in one, but the SkyWalk is something to see in its own right, even if you don’t make a stop anywhere else. This network of walkways stretches over 18 kilometres and offers views of the city. Kids will love that they can explore the city without putting on their snowsuit, hats, mittens and boots in the colder months. There’s plenty to eat and enjoy along the way, including connections to iconic attractions like the Calgary Tower and secret gems like the indoor play area at The CORE Shopping Centre.
