Looking to try something new that challenges your balance, strength and coordination? You’ll love the slackline at Flying Squirrel in Winnipeg, where falling isn’t just safe—it’s part of the fun.

Why I love yoga (and how it helped with slacklining)

Yoga isn't just a trendy pastime for me; it's a serious boost to my mood, energy, and overall health. But It’s also given me so much mobility and strength in my daily life. Now I have the energy to chase my kids around the park and the flexibility to bend over to tie my shoes without sounding like a bowl of Rice Krispies.

But recently, these yoga skills came in handy in the most unexpected way: at my kids’ birthday party at Flying Squirrel indoor trampoline park.

As the kids jumped and played, I slipped into my grippy socks to join the fun. And boy, was it fun!

The trampolines were a riot (though they did test my bladder control — #momproblems). I loved the rock climbing wall and doing my best Michael Jordan impression (hey, I was a child of the ‘90s) on the basketball court. But the real test was the slackline.

The slackline in Winnipeg: tougher than you might think

I watched as kid after kid took a few wobbly steps before diving into the safety of the foam pit below, laughing all the way. Thinking my yoga-honed balance would give me an edge, I stepped up to the challenge.

Spoiler alert: it was tougher than I thought.

Slacklining isn't just about physical balance; it's a mental game. To improve your balance, you need to focus on your breathing, stretch out your arms for balance, and cautiously test the line with one foot before committing your full weight.

I kept at an even pace, not going too slowly or too quickly. Then, after several (dozen) tries, with one foot after the other, breathing and concentrating on my goal—I made it to the end.

Step by step: A slackline success story

Did a crowd cheer for my slackline success? No. Were my kids impressed? They hardly noticed, caught up in their own fun—exactly as they should. However, a few kids watched in awe and wondered how I managed it. Rather than bore them with talk of yoga and breathing, I let them in on a little secret—I’m a (good) witch with magical powers.

If I’m being perfectly honest, it did feel a bit magical.
