A thrilling climb on Whitby's indoor rock climbing beanstalk

Looking for an exhilarating new hobby? You might just find it at your kids’ favourite indoor trampoline park. That’s what happened to me.

As a parent, most of my days don’t involve a lot of thrills (unless you count deescalating tantrums and wiping up questionable spills). But every once-in-while, I get to experience something outside of the usual joys and drudgery of day-to-day parent life. Over the years I’ve tried open water swimming, challenging mountain bike rides, and lately I’ve enjoyed some seriously fun indoor rock climbing. Not on actual outdoor rocks—after all, I have to stay alive for those aforementioned children. But on the indoor rock climbing wall (which is actually more of a gigantic beanstalk) at Flying Squirrel trampoline park in Whitby (where safety is a top priority, so I don’t feel like I’m taking any unnecessary risks).

Discovering indoor rock climbing in Whitby

It’s kind of the perfect situation: My kids get to go to their favourite place to bounce around and have fun and burn all their energy, and I get to try something new to challenge myself. The best part? I get to show my kids just how strong, capable and brave I am. Win-win.

As for the experience? It’s truly amazing. The first time, as I waited in line, I almost didn’t go through with it. As I looked up, I thought it would be impossible for me to manage the climb. But I dared myself to do it. As they harnessed me in, I was nervous but I knew I’d be safe with the harness. My hands slipped at first (sweaty hands anyone?) but then I got the hang of it (pun intended). Hand over hand, I climbed, steadily gaining confidence with each climbing hold. I was so focused on the task at hand that reaching the top took me by surprise. I had made it, almost without realizing just how high I had climbed.

And then I looked down. Instantly, a wave of panic washed over me. Getting up there had seemed almost easy compared to the daunting thought of descending. Should I climb down or rappel? That's when I caught sight of my kids’ faces beaming up at me, their eyes wide with admiration. Their looks seemed to say, “Wow! Look at my grown-up!” Realizing how important it was for them to see me in this light, I decided to make the descent memorable. With a push from the magical beanstalk, I let myself drop, feet kicking against the rock face all the way down. It was exhilarating!

Conquering fears with indoor rock climbing

That rush of adrenaline is what draws me back to Flying Squirrel’s indoor rock climbing feature time and time again. The thrill, the perceived risk, yet knowing I’m completely safe—it’s just plain fun. Plus, it’s the perfect way for the kids to have a blast too. We all leave feeling rejuvenated, our bodies tired but spirits lifted from a day filled with challenge and laughter.
