Your ultimate guide of fun things to do in Calgary during the summer

Sometimes it feels like winter will never end in Calgary. Even in May when other parts of Canada have stored their parkas and toques for the season (pipe down, Toronto, we don’t want to hear it), ours never quite leave our front hall closet…just in case.

But when the summer officially arrives in Calgary, it’s truly something special. The sun shines, the days seem to last forever, and the possibilities for fun seem endless.

Here’s your go-to guide of fun things to do in Calgary to make the most out of those glorious summer days in one of Canada’s most dynamic and beautiful cities.

  1. Picnic in Prince’s Island Park

Kick off your summer with a leisurely picnic at Prince’s Island Park, an urban oasis in the heart of Calgary. With the Bow River flowing gently by and plenty of lush, green spaces, it’s the perfect spot for a family gathering or a quiet afternoon with a good book. Pack a basket with some local treats from the nearby Eau Claire Market, spread out a blanket, and enjoy a sunny day in the great company of nature (and friends and family, of course).

  1. Cool Down at Flying Squirrel in north Calgary

When the summer heat peaks and you need a break from the sun, head indoors to Flying Squirrel, Calgary’s ultimate trampoline park. This isn’t just any indoor playground; it’s a high-energy, fun-filled haven where kids and adults can play until their abs are sore from bouncing and laughing. From dodgeball courts to foam pits and slacklines, there’s something here to unleash everyone’s inner child (or outer child, for the under 12 set). It’s the perfect place to cool down while still burning off that summer energy.

  1. Take a Ride at Calaway Park

For thrill-seekers, Calaway Park offers a day of excitement with its wide array of rides and attractions. As Western Canada’s largest outdoor family amusement park, it features everything from dizzying roller coasters to family-friendly carousels. There’s also a variety of live entertainment and tempting food options to keep your spirits high and your energy up throughout the day.

  1. Float Down the Bow River

For a truly unique Calgary experience, grab a raft and float down the Bow River. This popular summer activity gives you a front-row seat to some of the best views of the city’s skyline and natural landscapes. You can start your journey from Bowness Park and drift down to Prince’s Island Park. Just remember to wear sunscreen and bring water to stay hydrated.

  1. Attend a Festival

Summer in Calgary is festival season. From the world-famous Calgary Stampede to the Calgary Folk Music Festival and the Calgary International Blues Festival, there’s a festival to match every interest and age group.

  1. Visit the Heritage Park Historical Village

Step back in time at the Heritage Park Historical Village, where you can explore how Canadians lived from the 1860s to the 1950s. With its authentically recreated historical buildings and costumed staff, the park offers a captivating glimpse into the past. Ride on a steam train, check out the old-fashioned amusement rides, or enjoy a horse-drawn wagon ride.

  1. Watch the Sunset at Tom Campbell’s Hill

End a perfect summer day by watching the sunset from Tom Campbell’s Hill, overlooking the impressive Calgary skyline against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. It’s the ideal spot for photographers and romantics alike, providing a peaceful setting to reflect on your fun-filled day.

Whether you’re bouncing away at Flying Squirrel or soaking up the sun at a local park, Calgary offers a multitude of ways to enjoy the thrilling (however fleeting) summer season.
