Travelling to Calgary with the family? You are in for an adventure. There’s more to Cowtown than just the Stampede: from a thrilling trampoline park to interactive museums, this bustling city offers a mix of outdoor and indoor adventures that are perfect for families of all activity levels.
Here’s a roundup of some of the best spots to keep both the little ones and the big ones (that’s you) entertained.
Step back in time at Canada’s largest living history museum, Heritage Park Historical Village. With over 180 exhibits spread across 127 acres, the park offers a full range of authentic experiences from the 1860s to the 1950s. Kids can ride on a genuine steam engine, churn butter in a historical farmhouse, and even take a horse-drawn wagon ride. The bustling old town square, antique midway, and year-round bakery are perfect for family explorations. Don’t miss the Gasoline Alley Museum where vintage car enthusiasts, young and old, can marvel at the beautifully restored classic cars and gas pumps.
A visit to Calgary wouldn't be complete without spending a day at the Calgary Zoo. It's home to more than 1,000 animals from around the world and various ecosystems. From the majesty of the Canadian wilds to the heart of the African Savannah, families can explore diverse habitats. The zoo’s commitment to conservation is evident, and their engaging educational programs make learning fun for everyone. Be sure to check out the Panda Passage for a memorable encounter with the beloved giant pandas.
When the weather isn’t cooperating, or if you’re just looking to help the kids burn a little energy before you head back to your comfy hotel room for the night, head to Flying Squirrel in North Calgary. With indoor attractions dedicated to freestyle jumps, dodgeball, foam pits, and even an inflatable park, kids (and adults!) can literally jump off the walls. The toddler area ensures that the littlest jumpers can have fun in a safe environment, making this spot a hit for all ages. It’s the perfect place to burn off some energy while having a blast.
Ignite your curiosity at the Telus Spark Science Centre, where interactive exhibits and impressive science shows make learning exciting. The centre encourages hands-on engagement, which means kids can touch, play, and experiment their way through various fields of science and technology. One big highlight is the Creative Kids Museum where the younger ones can splash in water and build giant structures.
For a more relaxed day, pack a picnic and head to Bowness Park, a beautiful space located along the Bow River. In the summer, families can rent boats and paddle around the lagoon or cycle around the scenic pathways. Winter transforms the park into a snowy wonderland with ice skating and cross-country skiing. The park also has a mini-train, popular with kids, which travels around the park making stops at various attractions.
Located at Canada Olympic Park, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame is a must-visit for sports enthusiasts. This museum is dedicated to Canada’s sports history and its sporting heroes. With more than 100,000 square feet of space, the Hall features 12 galleries and over 50 interactive experiences — try shadow boxing, wheelchair racing, or broadcasting a sports segment to get a real feel of the athletic world.
